FAQs

How do I draw a hat so the brim looks right?
The brim is an ellipse and the crown sits on it as a second, smaller ellipse. Draw both all the way round, even the hidden half, then erase what the crown covers. That is what keeps the brim from tilting.
How do I draw a hat on a head?
Sketch the skull first and set the hat band where it actually sits, which is lower at the back than at the front. The brim follows that tilt, and a hard shadow falls from the brim across the forehead and eyes.
How do I draw different hat materials?
Felt has soft edges and a matte fall of tone. Straw has a visible woven texture and a slightly ragged brim edge. Silk has one hard narrow highlight. Wool has a ribbed surface and thick soft folds.
What is the easiest hat to draw?
A beanie, because it has no brim and no rigid structure, so small errors read as folds. A flat cap from the side is next, since one clean curve for the peak does most of the work.
Can I use a hat drawing as a mockup base?
Yes. Ask for a plain front or three-quarter view on a white background with even lighting and no strong shadow, then add your artwork on the Canvas so it sits on the crown panel.
How do I draw a set of hats in one style?
Use Style Transfer to lock the drawing style, then generate each hat in turn at the same angle and scale. The set sits together, which suits a shop page, a lookbook or a wardrobe sheet.
