How do I make a planet drawing look round?
Curve the surface markings so they compress toward the edges, grade the tone from a light side to a dark side, and keep the brightest point off centre. A flat circle with stripes across it reads as a disc.
How do I draw the rings on a planet?
Draw the ring as an ellipse that passes behind the sphere on one side and in front on the other, and hide it where the planet blocks it. Tilting the ellipse gives the planet its angle.
How do I draw cloud bands on a gas giant?
Keep the bands horizontal but let them bow with the curve of the sphere and narrow near the rim. Add one darker oval storm off the equator to break the pattern up.
What should go behind a planet drawing?
Usually as little as possible. Deep flat black separates the sphere cleanly. If you want stars, ask for a few small ones rather than a field, so they do not compete with the surface.
Can I draw a set of planets that look like they belong together?
