How do I draw a salmon so it reads as a salmon?
The profile does the work: a streamlined body that tapers evenly, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and the tail, and dark spots scattered above the lateral line. Name the adipose fin specifically, since most stock drawings leave it off.
How do I draw the scales without drawing every one?
Render scales in detail only along the back and behind the gill cover, then let them fade to plain tone toward the belly. Salmon scales are small and fine, so suggesting them beats mapping them.
