Cigarette

The dry crackle of an ember on a long drag, ash tapped off against glass, and a cigarette stubbed out in the tray. Describe the moment and Morphic generates it clean, slow burn to sharp hiss.

  • An ember crackling on a drag, ash tapped off, a butt crushed in the tray
  • Each drag and crackle shaped for your noir office or late-night balcony
  • Comes back as clean, isolated audio you download and drop on the frame the ember glows

Drag

Three hard drags with the ember crackling on each, the take for a pause before a character answers.

Burning in the tray

A steady dry crackle from a cigarette left to burn, useful under a long wordless shot of someone waiting.

Edit prompt

Stubbed out

The crush and grind of a butt pressed into glass, a clean ending for a conversation or a decision made.

Edit prompt

Ash taps

Three crisp ticks of a cigarette knocked on the rim, small nervous punctuation for an interrogation or a stakeout.

Edit prompt

Pack tapped and opened

A pack knocked against a palm, the lid flipped and a cigarette slid out, the ritual before the first light.

Edit prompt

Ways to use a cigarette sound effect

Close an argument with the cigarette going out

One hard stub-out on the last line ends a scene with a full stop, in a crime drama, a visual novel or an animated short.

Hold a long wordless wait with only the ember

A cigarette burning in the tray carries a held shot of someone waiting, so a video or a podcast scene stays alive with no score.

Set a smoky back-room card game

Drags on a cigarette under the dealing tell the audience it is late and the stakes are high, in a period film, a game level or an audio drama.

Let the audience know someone is smoking off camera

Ash tapped on glass from the edge of frame puts a watcher in the room, so a thriller or a radio play never has to show them.

FAQs

What is a cigarette sound effect?
It is a recording of a cigarette in use, the ember crackling on a drag, ash tapped against an ashtray, or the butt crushed out at the end. It is a small, close sound that tells the audience someone is smoking, waiting or thinking, often in a noir or crime scene.
Where can I get cigarette sounds for a video?
Generate them from a prompt. Describing the cigarette moment you need takes less time than digging through a stock library, and you get the exact take your scene needs. Every sound on this page was made from the prompt printed beside it, so you can start from one and adjust it.
How do I make a custom cigarette sound effect?
Describe what the cigarette is doing and what it touches, and ask for it close and clearly audible, then generate it. A prompt like "a cigarette tapped three times on the rim of a glass ashtray, a crisp tick each time" gives Morphic enough to work with, and you can adjust the wording until it fits the shot.
What is the difference between a drag, a burn and a stub-out?
A drag is a short crackle that swells as air is pulled through the ember. A burn is the lighter, steady crackle of a cigarette left in the tray, a bed that sits under a whole shot. A stub-out is a quick crush and grind that ends the moment, so it lands on a cut or a line.
Can I use these cigarette sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each sound is generated for you, you also avoid the clip turning up in someone else's video.
Why does my cigarette sound not sit right in the edit?
Usually the crackle is too far away or too loud for a sound this small. A cigarette is heard close, so keep it dry and near, and sync the crackle to the ember brightening on the drag. If the lighting of the cigarette is in shot, cut the lighter strike first and let the drag follow it.
