Fan sound effects

A desk fan oscillating, a ceiling fan turning slowly, an extractor droning, and the white noise people sleep to. Name the machine and Morphic builds it.

  • Name the machine, the speed, and whether it oscillates
  • A hum written for your room, not a shared stock bed
  • Clean audio steady enough to sleep through

Fan sounds for film, games, and sleep audio

Desk fan

0:08

An even airy whir with a faint motor buzz under it. The buzz is what makes it a machine rather than plain noise.

Edit prompt

Oscillating fan

0:10

The same whir sweeping side to side. The slow rise and fall is what tells an audience the machine is moving.

Edit prompt

Ceiling fan

0:08

A soft rhythmic whoomp of wide blades. Slower and more felt than a desk fan, and it reads as a warm climate.

Edit prompt

Extractor fan

0:10

A hollow rattling hum with hard reflections. The room is doing half the work, and it places the scene in a bathroom or a kitchen.

Edit prompt

Fan white noise

0:12

A smooth even wash with the motor almost gone. Built for sleeping rather than for a scene, so nothing in it draws attention.

Edit prompt

Industrial fan

0:10

A heavy low roar with real air moving. Big enough to force people to raise their voices, which changes how a scene plays.

Ways to use fan sound effects

Punctuate a cut into a hot room

Bringing a ceiling fan up on the cut changes the temperature of a scene before the picture explains anything.

Let a steady hum hold a still room

An even whir gives a static interior something to sit under and never fights a line, which is why it is used so often.

Say the building is functional, not domestic

An extractor with hard tiled reflections places a scene in a bathroom or a back kitchen rather than a living room.

Make characters raise their voices

An industrial fan is loud enough to change how people talk, which does more for a location than any dialogue about it.

FAQs

How do I make a fan sound like a real machine?
Add the motor. A fan is moving air plus a motor, and prompts that ask only for a hum return plain noise. Naming a faint motor buzz or a low rumble underneath is what makes it read as something built rather than something ambient.
How do I show a fan is oscillating?
Ask for the hum to rise and fall slowly as it sweeps. That slow cycle is the only cue an audience has that the machine is turning, and it works even when the fan is never on screen.
What is the difference between a desk fan and a ceiling fan?
Rhythm. A desk fan is an even continuous whir, while a ceiling fan has wide slow blades that produce a soft rhythmic whoomp. The ceiling version also reads as a warmer climate.
What makes good fan white noise for sleep?
Smoothness and the absence of events. Ask for the motor to be almost inaudible and for no rhythm at all, since anything periodic gives the ear something to track and keeps people awake rather than settling them.
How do I place a fan in a specific room?
Describe the reflections. A small tiled room gives an extractor a hollow rattle, while a carpeted bedroom gives a desk fan almost none. The room is often more identifying than the machine.
Can I use these fan sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each bed is generated rather than pulled from a shared catalogue, you also avoid the same hum under someone else's scene.
