FAQs
What is a film sound effect?
Film sound effects are the sounds of shooting and showing film by hand: a clapperboard snapping, a camera rolling, a projector whirring, a strip of celluloid pulled off a reel or cut on a splicer. They place a scene on set or in an old cutting room.
Where can I get film sounds for a video?
Generate them on Morphic by describing the gear and the action. It is quicker than hunting a stock library for the right projector or clapper, and every sound on this page was made from the prompt printed beside it, so you can start from one.
How do I make a custom film sound effect?
Pick the piece of film gear, say what it does and how close it sits, then generate it. A prompt like "a wind-up cine camera rolling, the clockwork motor purring and celluloid ticking through the gate" gives Morphic enough to work with.
What is the difference between film, cinema and projector sounds?
Film sounds cover making and handling film: the clapper, the camera, the reel and the splicer. Cinema sounds are the audience side, the lobby, snacks and doors, and projector sounds focus on the machine running a reel or slides.
Can I use these film sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each sound is generated for you, you also avoid the clip turning up in someone else's video.
Why does my film sound not sit right in the edit?
Old film gear sounds wrong when it is too clean for the picture. Keep the projector or camera at a low steady level under the scene, and let single events like the clapper or a splice cut through only on the frame you see them.
