FAQs
What is a groan sound effect?
It is a low, drawn out vocal sound pushed from the throat, used for frustration, effort, tiredness or a creepy undead voice. The groans here cover bad news, heavy lifting, tired knees, zombies and ghosts, for comedy, horror, games and animation.
Where can I get groan sounds for a video?
Describe the groan and generate it. The word covers everything from a fed up ugh to a zombie, so a written description finds the right one faster than a search. Every clip on this page was made from the prompt printed beside it, so you can start from one.
How do I make a custom groan sound effect?
Lead with a bracket tag that sets the cause and texture, such as [loud exasperated groan] or [slow, rasping zombie groan], then write the sound. Generate it and change the tag until the weight and length suit the moment.
What is the difference between a groan, a grunt and a sigh?
A grunt is short and clipped, a burst of effort or impact. A groan is longer and voiced, carrying frustration, tiredness or strain. A sigh is mostly breath with little voice behind it, so it reads calmer than a groan.
Can I use these groan sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each sound is generated for you, you also avoid the clip turning up in someone else's video.
Why does my zombie groan sound too human?
Ask for rasping, slow and wordless in the bracket, and keep the take dry and close. Pitch it a little lower in the edit and add a touch of space so it feels like it comes from somewhere in the dark.
