Anatomy of a sound effect prompt

A text prompt becomes sound when it answers four questions. What is making the noise, what does it feel like, where does it happen, and how long does it last. Get those four in and the model has enough to work with.

FAQs

What does text to sound effects mean?
You write a plain description of the sound you want and the model returns an original clip that matches it. No recording, no library search, just words in and audio out.
How do I write a good sound effect prompt?
Name four things: the subject, its texture, the space it sits in, and how long it runs. "A rope whip cracking, sharp and dry, close to the mic, about one second" gives the model everything it needs.
Why is my prompt not giving me the sound I pictured?
Usually the texture or the space is missing. Add whether it is bright or dull, wet or dry, close or distant, then regenerate. Small wording changes move the result a lot.
Can I control how long the effect is?
Yes. State a length in the prompt, from a quick one-shot to a long ambience bed. Ask for "about two seconds" or "a slow ten-second build" and generate variations until it lands.
What models turn my text into sound?
Morphic runs audio models including ElevenLabs and Seed Audio. Different models read a prompt differently, so try the same description across a couple and keep the take that fits.
Where can I see examples of prompts and their sounds?
You can browse the sound library for hundreds of worked examples by category, then reuse the wording that gets close to what you need.
