Nervous sounds for games, animation, and video edits

Shaky breath

A short trembling breath in and a thin unsteady breath out, for a character about to speak, step on stage or open a door.

Hard gulp

One loud wet swallow close to the microphone, the beat before a bad answer, a reveal or a confession.

Fidgeting fingertips

Quick uneven taps on a wooden table, never settling into a pattern, for someone who cannot keep still while they wait.

Cracked nervous laugh

Two small breathy huffs with a thin cracking tone, the laugh that covers an awkward moment.

Tapping heel

A shoe heel knocking a hard floor in fast uneven runs, for a waiting room, an interview or a held phone call.

Dry throat clear

A quick rasping cough and a tight swallow, the sound of someone about to say something difficult.

Ways to use a nervous sound effect

Mark the second before a bad answer

A single hard gulp on the cut gives a face a worried voice, in a short film, an animated scene or a game cutscene.

常见问题

What is a nervous sound effect?
It is a small human cue that tells the audience a character is anxious: a shaky breath, a gulp, a cracked laugh or restless fingers. Most nervous sound searches mean this kind of short close-up cue rather than music.
Where can I get nervous sounds for a video?
Describe the breath or fidget you want and generate it. The six sounds here each come from the prompt printed beside them, so you can start from one and adjust it for your scene.
How do I make a custom nervous sound effect?
Say what the person is doing and how it trembles. A prompt like "a hand drumming fingertips quickly and unevenly on a wooden tabletop" gives Morphic enough to build the sound, and you can change the wording until it fits.
What is the difference between a gulp, a breath and a fidget?
A gulp and a breath are voiced and sit close to the microphone, so they feel personal. A fidget or a heel tap is an object sound that suggests restlessness from further away. Layering one of each makes a nervous character believable by ear.
Can I use these nervous sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Each sound is generated for you, so it will not appear in someone else's edit.
Why does my nervous sound feel too comic?
Usually the gulp or laugh is too loud and too long. Ask for a quieter, thinner version and place it just before the line of dialogue rather than on top of it.
