Thud sound effect

A landing with real mass behind it. Say what falls, how heavy it is and what it lands on, and the weight arrives in the low end rather than in the volume.

Thud impacts for film, games, and animation

Heavy landing on wood

Deep, flat and finished the moment it arrives. This is the version most edits are actually after, because the mass is carried by the low body rather than by any crack on the front of it.

Sandbag on concrete

Dense and muffled, with the grain shifting inside as it settles. Concrete gives nothing back, so this reads as the heaviest option on the page without being the loudest.

Book landing flat on a desk

A hardback dropped flat, with pages fluttering behind the slap. It is the lightest impact here, and useful when a scene needs punctuation rather than damage.

Thump from above

The same landing with the top end taken off and a short echo trailing it. Losing the high edge is what puts the impact on the other side of a ceiling, not turning it down.

Shoulder into a door

A body driving into heavy timber, with the frame rattling briefly after the hit. The rattle is what tells the audience the door held.

Box set down hard

The landing plus everything inside settling after it. That second half is what turns a single hit into an action somebody performed, which is usually what a shot needs.

Ways to use a thud sound effect

Mark the moment something lands

A flat low landing with a fast front edge sits exactly where you place it, so a drop in a game, an animation or a live-action cut reads on the right frame.

Carry a quiet stretch without adding music

One weighted landing holds a long shot on its own. It works under a podcast interlude or a level transition as readily as under a held camera move.

Tell the audience how solid the building is

Concrete swallows an impact and timber gives back a rattle. Swapping the surface changes what kind of place the scene is in, with nothing on screen changing.

Put something heavy in the room above

A dulled thump with a faint echo behind it puts a person upstairs in a game or a film without building the floor they are standing on.

常见问题

What is a thud sound effect?
It is the dull low sound of a heavy mass meeting a surface, with the force carried in the body rather than in any sharp crack. That absence of a bright edge is the whole character: a thud tells you something weighed a lot, where a knock tells you something was hard.
How do I make a thud sound effect?
Name the mass and the surface it meets. Say roughly how heavy the falling object is, what it lands on, how long the low body runs, and whether anything settles afterwards. Those four details separate a bag hitting concrete from a body hitting floorboards.
What makes a thud sound heavy?
Length in the low end, not level. A heavy landing holds its body for a fraction longer and has no high edge on the front of it, so asking for a deep dull body with no ring does more than raising the volume of a thin impact ever will.
How do I make a thud sound like it came from upstairs?
Take away the top end instead of taking away the level. Ask for the high edge gone, the tone dulled to a low knock, and a faint short echo behind it. Distance changes the colour of a sound, and a simply quieter thud just reads as a small one.
Should a thud have any ring to it?
Almost never. Ringing means something hard and hollow was struck, which pushes the sound toward a knock or a clang. If your landing hums after it arrives, ask for no ring and a short low body and it will settle back into place.
Can I use a generated thud sound commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Building your own also lets a series keep one consistent weight across every episode, instead of borrowing whichever library impact happened to be at hand.
