Stem separation

How to split a mixed audio track into separate stems on Morphic, such as vocals and instrumental, by asking Copilot.

Stem separation on Morphic splits one mixed audio file into separate tracks, called stems, also known as a vocal remover or karaoke maker. You attach a track in Copilot and ask for the split, and each stem comes back as its own audio file, the same length as the source. There are two splits, and two stems is the default:

SplitStems you getAsk for it with
Two stems (default)Vocals, instrumental"Remove the vocals", "Make an instrumental", "Give me the a cappella"
Six stemsVocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, other"Split this into every instrument", "Give me the drums and bass separately"

When to use it

  • Lay a song under a scene without the singing
  • Lift a vocal out of a finished mix for a remix or a new arrangement
  • Keep one instrument, such as the piano, and drop the rest
  • Work from a final mix when you have no session files

Split a track

  1. Open Copilot
  2. Attach the audio file with the paperclip
  3. Ask for the split, for example "Split this into vocals and instrumental"
  4. The stems appear in the chat as separate audio files

The Copilot prompt box with the request: Split this song into vocals and instrumental

To split the sound of a video, attach the video and ask the same way. Copilot pulls its audio out first, then splits it.

Limits

ItemLimit
InputOne audio file per split. A video's audio is extracted first
LengthUp to 10 minutes
OutputTwo or six audio files, each the length of the source
PlansEvery plan

Stem separation is not on the Canvas prompt bar. Use Copilot for it.

What it costs

A split is charged on the length of the source track. Six stems cost more than two. Ask Copilot for the cost before it runs, and see current rates on Plans & Credits.

Tips

  • It splits music into parts. It does not remove background noise from a voice recording
  • Split a short section first when you only need part of a song. Trim it, then split the part you will use
  • Bring the stems into Compose to mix them back against your picture

That's how you use Stem separation on Morphic. Reach for it when you have the finished mix and need one part of it on its own.
