What actually makes a drawing look 3D?
Three things working together: a consistent light direction, distinct values on each plane, and a cast shadow. Value is the heaviest of the three. If the top, the side and the front of a box are the same grey, no amount of perspective will make it read as solid.
How do I shade a sphere so it looks round?
Work in bands that follow the curve rather than straight across. Highlight, then mid tone, then the core shadow as a band inside the edge, then reflected light along the very rim, then the cast shadow on the surface. The reflected light is what stops the edge looking like a cut-out.
How do I draw something that looks like a hole in the paper?
Draw the opening as an ellipse rather than a circle, since you are looking into it at an angle, then darken the far inside wall and leave the near wall lighter. A small cast shadow on the paper just outside the rim, on the side away from the light, completes it.
Why does my 3D drawing look flat even with shading?
Usually the shadow is missing or floating. An object with no cast shadow has nothing to sit on, so it reads as a pattern. Put the shadow directly opposite the light, keep it attached at the point the object touches the surface, and soften its edge as it travels away.
How do I keep a plain surface behind a 3D drawing?
Ask for a flat white or plain paper background with no room or setting behind the object, then crop it on the Canvas. A busy background competes with the cast shadow, which is the one element doing the work of grounding the form.
Can I keep a set of 3D drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first drawing, then apply it across the rest so the line weight, the shading approach and the light direction stay the same. Matching the light direction across a set matters most here, because a sheet of solids lit from different sides never reads as one study.
