A cue for the mistake, a way to end the take, something to cover the join between clips, and laughter underneath. The clapperboard at the top is optional but it frames the whole reel in one sound.
Why does my buzzer sound like a quiz show?
It is too harsh and too bright. Ask for a dull flat unpitched rasp instead. A harsh buzzer implies someone is being judged, where a dull one just says the take is over.
How do I get the tape-stop effect?
Describe it as a continuous downward drop in both pitch and speed ending in silence, with a soft mechanical end. Asking for a tape stop by name alone tends to return a rewind instead.
Why does my crew laughter sound like one person?
It was prompted as a group. Ask for several separate voices each starting at a different moment, uneven and overlapping, and put it off to one side so it reads as people behind the camera.
Should the sounds be polished?
No, and that is the one rule worth keeping. Outtake sounds work because they are cheap and thin. A well-produced package makes the reel feel staged, which is the opposite of what it is for.
