What makes walking sound effects match the picture?
Three things, in order: the sole, the surface, and the pace. A generator has no idea what walking sounds like until it knows what is touching what, and pace is the one most people leave out even though it decides whether the steps sync at all.
How do I make a walking sound effect?
Name the shoe and the surface, then describe one step. Say what the sole is made of, what it lands on, what noise the contact makes, and what happens as the foot lifts again. The cycle builds itself once one step is specified properly.
Why do my footsteps sound like they are pasted on?
Usually because every step is identical. Real walking varies slightly step to step, so ask for the steps to land unevenly, and pick a surface that shifts underfoot if the shot allows it. Identical repeats are what the ear catches.
How do I make footsteps sound heavier?
Describe the weight going into the ground rather than asking for volume. A heavy walk compresses the surface, arrives more slowly, and holds contact longer before the lift, and all three of those are things you can put in the request.
Should footsteps be generated dry?
Yes, every time. You want to place the walk in your own space with your own reverb, and a take that already carries reflections from somewhere else can never be moved convincingly into the room on screen.
