FAQs

How do I draw cardinal red without it looking flat?
Vary it. The back and wings sit darker and slightly cooler than the breast, the crest catches the most light, and the shaded side runs toward deep crimson rather than grey. Layering two or three reds beats reaching for one saturated tone.
How do I draw the crest?
Treat it as a small group of stiff feathers rather than one triangle. Say how raised it is, since a fully raised crest reads as alert or singing and a flattened one reads as calm. That single choice changes the whole mood of the drawing.
What is the difference between the male and female cardinal?
The male is bright red overall with a black mask around the beak. The female is warm buff and olive-brown with red edging on the crest, wings and tail, and a softer grey mask. Both have the same crest and stout orange beak.
How do I draw snow on the branch without losing the bird?
Leave the snow as bare paper and let the branch tone define it, rather than adding white on top. Keep the background a flat pale grey so the red stays the strongest thing in the frame.
Can I use a cardinal drawing on a card or an ornament?
Yes. Generate the bird on a plain background, crop it on the Canvas, and download it in HD. Add any lettering yourself on the Canvas so you control the font and spacing rather than asking for text in the prompt.
Can I keep several bird drawings in the same style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first drawing, then apply it as you generate each species so the line weight, feather treatment and palette stay consistent across the set.
