FAQs

What makes a cheetah drawing read as a cheetah and not a leopard?
Two things. Cheetah spots are solid round dots, while leopard markings are broken rosettes with a pale centre. And a cheetah has black tear lines running from the inner eye down to the mouth. Name both in the prompt and the species is unmistakable.
How do I draw a cheetah running?
Pick one frame of the gait rather than an average. At full extension the spine is arched, the front and back legs reach away from each other and all four feet are off the ground. Add that the tail streams out straight behind as a counterweight.
How do I draw the spots without covering the whole animal?
Spots are dense on the back and flanks, sparse on the legs and almost absent on the belly and throat. Ask for that gradient rather than an even field, and the coat follows the form instead of flattening it.
What are the right cheetah proportions?
A deep narrow chest, a very tight waist, long thin legs and a small rounded head with high-set eyes. The tail is nearly as long as the body. Getting the waist tight and the head small is what separates a cheetah from a generic big cat.
How do I draw cheetah fur texture?
The coat is short and coarse, so use short directional strokes that follow the body rather than long soft blending. Keep the texture heaviest along the spine and the shoulder and let it fade on the belly where the fur is paler.
Can I keep a set of big cat drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of your first cheetah, then apply it while you generate a lion, a tiger and a leopard so the line weight, fur treatment and palette stay consistent across the whole set.
