How do I draw coral so it does not look like a shapeless blob?
Give each coral a named growth form: antler-shaped branching, domed and grooved like a brain, flat and plated like a table, or a fine open mesh like a sea fan. Mixing three distinct forms in one drawing is what makes a reef read as a reef.
How do I show depth in a reef drawing?
Drop the contrast as you go back. Keep sharp line and dark tone on the nearest corals, then reduce the far ones to soft outline with a pale wash over them. One or two fish placed mid-distance also give the eye a scale reference.
Can I draw a coral reef for a school or ecosystem poster?
Yes. Ask for a labelled cross-section or a flat vector reef strip with an even outline and no shading, since both print and photocopy cleanly. Add the labels yourself on the Canvas so the wording stays in your own words.
What colours should a coral reef drawing use?
Keep the water cool and the corals warm. Turquoise and grey-blue for the field, with pink, coral orange and pale yellow for the corals themselves. Too many saturated colours at once flattens the depth you built with tone.
