FAQs

How do I draw a key step by step?
Start with the shaft as one straight line, put the bow on top as a closed shape, then cut the teeth into the bit at the bottom. Naming those three parts separately in the prompt keeps the proportions from drifting.
How do I get a key drawing I can use as an icon?
Ask for a flat outline with one even stroke weight, a simple round bow, no shading and a flat white background. That version crops cleanly on the Canvas and stays readable when it is scaled down small.
How do I draw an old skeleton key?
Ask for a long round shaft, a scrolled openwork bow and a flat toothed bit at the end, in pitted iron rather than clean metal. Cross-hatching along one side of the shaft gives it weight.
How do I make the metal look like metal?
Metal reads through contrast rather than colour: a hard bright edge next to a dark reflection. Ask for a crisp highlight along one side of the shaft and a dark band on the other, and leave the middle tone thin.
Can I get a key drawing on a plain background for a layout?
Yes. Ask for the key alone on flat white with no surface under it, then crop it on the Canvas. It drops straight into a poster, a card or a title page without any cleanup.
Which medium suits a key drawing best?
Ink line suits ornate ironwork, coloured pencil carries warm brass, charcoal works when you want the key to sit in deep shadow, and a flat outline is the one to pick for anything you plan to place in a layout.
