FAQs

How do you draw a tombstone so it looks like carved stone?
Stone reads through irregularity. Ask for a chipped top edge, a pitted surface and a contour that is never perfectly straight. A clean rectangle with even shading reads as cardboard no matter how dark you push the shadows.
Should the tombstone have writing on it?
Usually not. Generated lettering tends to come back garbled, and a blank or barely suggested face looks more convincing anyway. Ask for no lettering, then add your own text on the Canvas or in your layout tool.
How do I make a tombstone look old?
Tilt it a few degrees off vertical, sink one corner into the grass, chip the top edge and let moss or lichen creep up from the base. Age shows in the silhouette before it shows in the texture.
How do I draw a tombstone for a Halloween poster?
Go flat. A clean silhouette with no interior texture holds up at small sizes and prints cleanly in one colour. Draw two or three at different heights so you can stagger them along the bottom of the layout.
How do I draw a graveyard without drawing every stone?
Detail the two or three stones nearest the viewer and reduce everything behind them to soft grey shapes with no edges. Distance does the work, so the eye fills in the rest of the rows.
Which medium suits a tombstone drawing best?
Graphite handles weathered stone texture well, charcoal suits a moonlit or foggy scene because you can lift light back out, and stipple gives fine control over a carved bevel. Vector line is right for flat seasonal graphics.
