FAQs

How do I draw a vase step by step?
Draw a vertical centre line, then the profile on one side only. Mirror it across the line, then close the top and base with ellipses that curve the same way. Shade last, following the curve of the body rather than running straight down.
How do I draw a symmetrical vase?
The centre line is the whole trick. Mark the widest point, the neck and the base on it first, then draw one half and mirror it. Turning the page and checking the silhouette upside down catches any drift.
Why do the ellipses on my vase look wrong?
They probably do not agree with each other. Every ellipse on the vase shares one eye level, so the ones further from it look rounder and the one nearest looks flatter. Keep them all curving the same way and the vessel stands up.
How do I draw a glass vase?
Draw what is behind and inside it, not the glass. Show the stems bending at the waterline, a darker band where the glass thickens at the edges, and one or two hard highlights. Leave most of the body as bare paper.
How do I shade a vase so it looks round?
Curve the hatching around the form and keep a lighter band about a third in from the lit edge. Add a thin strip of reflected light inside the shadow side so the body does not flatten into a cone.
Can I get a vase drawing on a plain background?
Yes. Ask for a plain white background with no table, no flowers and no cast shadow, then crop it on the Canvas. That gives you a clean silhouette for a poster, a menu or a product layout.
