Airplane sound effects

Jets and propellers, from a pass overhead to the seat you are sitting in. Say where the aircraft is in its move and Morphic generates that exact stage.

  • Say what is flying and where it sits in its move
  • Audio made for your shot alone, not the same jet used in every travel video
  • Clean takes long enough to run under a full boarding sequence

Jets, propellers and the cabin around you

Pass overhead

Builds thin, thickens as it arrives, then falls away in pitch behind you. This is the version most edits want, because the drop in pitch is the only part that makes an aircraft read as moving rather than parked.

Takeoff roll

A single unbroken climb from idle to full thrust. Reach for it when the shot needs momentum: the sound is going somewhere for the whole of its length, so it pulls a static frame forward.

Cabin at cruise

Dense, even, and going nowhere, which is exactly right for the interior. It sits low enough under speech that a whole dialogue scene can play over it without any mixing work.

Propeller aircraft

Chopping blades over a rough piston engine. The unevenness is the whole character: it is what stops a small aircraft sounding like a scaled-down jet.

Touchdown and reverse thrust

A rubber chirp, then a broad surge that drops away. Two events in one take, which is why it lands an arrival on a single cut instead of needing three.

Cabin chime

Two soft electronic tones, high then low. The smallest sound on the page and the most recognisable: it puts an audience in a seat before anything else is established.

Ways to use airplane sound effects

Land a jet in the frame at the moment you cut

A pass that peaks in the middle gives you an obvious frame to cut on. Works the same over a flight sim capture or an animated sequence as it does over live footage.

Cover a wordless travel sequence with cabin rush alone

The interior bed is even enough to run for a full minute without drawing attention. Reach for it in a travel vlog or a game cutscene where music would tip the tone.

Place a scene in the age of propeller travel

A rough piston engine dates a shot immediately, with no set dressing. Handy in period drama, in animation, and in any documentary segment with archive stills over it.

Put a departure in earshot of a scene on the ground

A takeoff heard from outside the frame tells the audience where they are without a single wide shot. It works under dialogue in a podcast drama just as well as on picture.

FAQs

What makes an airplane sound effect read as moving?
The pitch falling as it goes by. A stationary aircraft holds one tone, while an aircraft travelling past you arrives brighter and leaves duller and lower. Ask for that change explicitly, because a recording without it always sounds like something idling no matter how loud it is.
How do I make an airplane sound effect from a description?
Describe the mechanism rather than the aircraft. Say how many engines are moving the air, whether the sound is a smooth rush or a chopping blade, and where the pitch starts and finishes. Naming an aircraft model tells the model far less than describing what is actually vibrating.
What is the difference between an approach and a pass by?
An approach only builds, and a pass by builds and then falls. That single distinction decides where your cut can go: an approach can run right up to the edit point, while a pass has its loudest moment in the middle and needs the frame chosen around it.
How do I get cabin audio with no passengers in it?
Describe the air moving over the shell instead of describing the cabin. Asking for a dense, even broadband rush with a faint drone underneath, and stating no voices, returns the bed on its own so you can add your own dialogue and service announcements on top.
Why does my jet sound wrong on a small propeller aircraft?
Because a turbofan is a continuous smooth rush and a propeller is a rapid series of separate blade strikes. Once you hear it, the difference is obvious, and a smooth jet bed under a visible spinning propeller is one of the most common mismatches in aviation footage.
Can I use generated airplane sound effects commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Generating the aircraft also sidesteps the practical problem with recording one yourself, which is that airfields rarely give you a take without traffic or voices in it.
