A closed grey door with warm light spilling under it onto a dim hallway floor, a soft blur of sound waves rippling the air in front

Muffled sounds for games, animation, and video edits

Thud through a wall

A sharp knock rounded into a soft low body, only the bass of the impact surviving the wall between listener and source.

Voice behind a door

A murmur of speech with the consonants gone, only a dull low hum of a person talking on the far side of a door.

Bass pulse leaking through

A steady thump of a beat with every high frequency removed, the sound of a party or a speaker in the next unit.

Knock from the far side

Three soft rounded taps on a heavy wooden door, too dull to give away who is knocking.

Glass break behind a window

A smash with its sparkle stripped away, only a dull crunch and a low rattle reaching the listener.

Footsteps overhead

Slow dull thumps with a faint creak, one step after another from the floor above the listener.

Ways to use a muffled sound effect

Mark a bang from the apartment next door

One dull thud through the wall makes a viewer look up, in a thriller, a sitcom or a horror game where the source stays hidden.

Fill a silent hallway with a hint of life

Slow overhead footsteps give a quiet scene a pulse with no score, in a drama, a podcast or an indie game.

Show a party carrying on behind a wall

A leaking bass pulse sets the place and the mood before the door opens, in a short film, a comedy or an animation.

Let the audience overhear what they cannot see

A murmur behind a door implies a conversation we never witness, in a mystery, an audio drama or a stealth level.

FAQs

What is a muffled sound effect?
It is a sound that has passed through a barrier, so the high frequencies are gone and only a dull, low version reaches the ear. A thud through a wall and a voice behind a door are the usual examples.
Where can I get muffled sounds for a video?
Describe the source and the barrier and generate it directly. Applying a low-pass filter to a bright clip works, but a sound generated as already muffled keeps its natural low body and needs no tweaking.
How do I make a custom muffled sound?
Name the sound, then the thing in the way, such as a knock on a thick wooden door heard from the far side. Add that the highs are removed and the attack is rounded.
What is the difference between a muffled voice and a whisper?
A whisper is quiet but still crisp, with its consonants. A muffled voice can be loud but dull, with the consonants gone, because something is between the speaker and the listener.
Can I use these muffled sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. The muffled voice contains no recognisable words.
Why does my muffled sound still sound bright?
The model may treat the barrier as decoration. Say plainly that the highs are removed and only the low body remains, and name a thick barrier such as a wall or a heavy door.
