The regularity. Hard electrical snaps at an even mechanical rate read as something engineered, while the same snaps at uneven spacing read as a fault in a cable. Ask for an even rate explicitly.
How long should a discharge run?
Around five seconds for a full cycle, which is long enough to be uncomfortable to listen to. A one-second burst is a threat rather than an action, and the two are worth generating separately.
How do I get the cartridge rather than the arc?
Ask for two events in sequence: a sharp compressed pop followed immediately by a fast rushing hiss. The hiss after the pop is what makes it read as something launched.
