How do I draw an alligator rather than a crocodile?
The snout is the tell. An alligator has a broad, rounded, U-shaped snout and only the upper teeth show when the mouth is closed, because the lower ones sit inside a bony socket. A crocodile snout is narrower and more V-shaped, and the fourth lower tooth sticks up outside the jaw. Draw the snout width first and the rest follows.
How do I draw the scutes without the back looking busy?
Treat the scutes as rows, not as individual shapes. Draw two or three ridge lines running the length of the back first, then break each line into segments that shorten toward the tail. Only the segments along the top edge need a full outline; the ones on the far side can drop to a mark.
How do I draw an alligator eye?
The eye sits on a raised bony ridge on top of the skull, not on the side of the head, which is why the animal can float with only the eyes above water. Draw the ridge as a small dome first, then put a vertical slit pupil in it and leave a hard highlight on one side of the slit.
How do I show an alligator half submerged?
Pick one horizontal line for the water and cut the animal against it cleanly, so the eye ridges, the nostrils and a few back scutes stay above and everything else stops. Add a faint ripple that follows the body under the surface. The break in the outline is what sells the depth.
How do I get a plain background for an alligator drawing?
