How do I draw axolotl gills?
There are three stalks on each side, not a random spray. Draw the stalks first as short curved branches leaving the neck at an angle, then feather the filaments off each one, longest in the middle and shorter at the ends. Keeping the filaments soft and slightly uneven is what stops them looking like combs.
How do I draw the face so it reads as an axolotl?
The mouth is a wide gentle curve that runs almost the full width of the head and turns up very slightly at the corners. The eyes are small, dark, set high and far apart with no visible lid. Widening the head and keeping the eyes tiny does more for the likeness than any amount of body detail.
How do I draw the body and limbs correctly?
The body is a soft tube, widest just behind the gills and tapering into a laterally flattened tail with a fin crest running along the top and bottom. The four limbs are short and thin with delicate splayed toes, four on the front feet and five on the back. They should look too small for the body, because they are.
How do I suggest translucent skin in a drawing?
Keep the outline light and leave the centre of the body mostly untouched, then push your darkest values only into the gill stalks and the shadow under the belly. In a wash, let the colour pool at the edges and stay pale in the middle. Uniform shading across the whole body kills the effect immediately.
How do I get a plain background behind the animal?
Ask for a flat white paper background with no tank, gravel or water around the axolotl, then crop it on the Canvas to the framing you want. A clean silhouette is what makes the drawing usable as a sticker, a print or one tile in a study sheet.
Can I keep a set of axolotl drawings in one style?
