How do I draw a birthday cake so it looks round and not flat?
Draw the top of each tier as an ellipse, not a straight line, and make the ellipse on a lower tier slightly wider and flatter than the one above it. Keep the side walls vertical and parallel. That single ellipse relationship does more for the solidity than any shading.
How do I draw candles that sit on the cake properly?
Place each candle base on the top ellipse rather than on the front edge, and keep every candle vertical even though they follow a curve across the surface. A small contact shadow or a ring of icing at the base stops them looking stuck on afterwards.
How do I draw icing so it reads as icing?
Pick one finish and stay with it. A piped border is a repeating row of teardrops along the tier edge, a drip glaze is uneven tongues of different lengths hanging from the top rim, and fondant is a smooth unbroken contour with a single soft highlight. Mixing all three in one drawing is what makes cakes look muddled.
How do I draw a cut slice of cake?
Treat the cut face as a flat wedge seen slightly from the side, with horizontal sponge layers and thinner cream bands between them. The layers stay parallel across the face, and the outer icing wraps only the curved edge, never the cut side.
How do I get a plain background or a tighter crop?
Ask for a flat white background with no room or table setting, then crop it on the Canvas so the cake sits centred with a little air above the candles. That keeps it clean enough for an invitation, a card front or a menu insert.
