Cannon sound effects

The firing boom with its rolling tail, a whole broadside, the shot landing somewhere else, the ramrod and the fuse. Describe the distance and Morphic builds it.

  • Ask for the tail, because how long the boom rolls is what sets the size of the battlefield
  • Audio cut for your scene rather than a stock cannon used across other productions
  • Download clean audio and drop it straight into your edit

Cannons for film, games, and animation

Single shot

A heavy compressed boom with a hard front edge and a long rolling tail. The tail is what makes it a cannon rather than a blast.

Broadside

Several booms at slightly different moments overlapping into one roll. The offsets are what stop it sounding like one loud shot.

Distant shot

The sharp front edge gone, soft and slow to fade. Places the battle somewhere over a hill.

Shot landing

A whistle falling in pitch then a heavy impact and debris. The receiving end, which most cannon audio forgets.

Ramrod and load

A shaft pushed twice down a hollow tube with a scrape and a firm stop. The waiting that makes the firing land.

Fuse burning

A fine sputtering hiss travelling and speeding up. Four seconds of dread before anything happens.

Ways to use a cannon sound effect

Punctuate the order to fire

The boom on the cut is the loudest punctuation a period scene has, and it works the same in a game as on film.

Fill the wait without music

A fuse burning carries four seconds of nobody moving, and the acceleration at the end times the cut for you.

Tell the audience how far the battle is

A hard front edge means here. Only a dull low roll means over the hill. The missing top is the distance.

Show a hit you never film

A falling whistle and an impact puts the shot landing somewhere off screen, so a scene can stay on the people who fired it.

常见问题

How is a cannon different from an explosion?
A cannon fires something. An explosion happens in place. That means a cannon has a direction, a projectile, and a loading sequence, none of which an explosion page carries.
How do I make the battlefield feel large?
Lengthen the tail. A boom with a long rolling decay reads as open ground, where a short tail reads as an enclosed space. The front of the sound barely changes.
How do I get a broadside rather than one loud shot?
Offset the guns. Ask for several booms firing at slightly different moments and overlapping into one roll, since perfectly simultaneous shots read as a single sound turned up.
What does most cannon audio leave out?
The landing. A falling whistle and a heavy impact with debris puts the shot somewhere, and without it a scene is all firing and no consequence.
What is worth generating for a period scene?
The loading. A ramrod down a hollow tube and a fuse burning do more for authenticity than the boom does, because they are the sounds an audience has not heard a hundred times.
Can I use these in a game or a film?
Yes. Audio generated on a paid Morphic plan is cleared for commercial use, including games, film, and broadcast.
