Punctuate a jump forward in time
A short whirr across a cut tells the audience time moved, which is faster than a caption and cheaper than a transition.

Fast forward sound effects
The tape spooling forward, the digital scrub, the speech sped up into a chatter, the whirring montage, and the clunk when it reaches the end.
- Ask for the direction to rise, because rising pitch is what an ear reads as moving forward
- Audio cut for your montage rather than a stock whirr used in other productions
- Download clean audio and drop it straight into your edit
Playback sounds for film, games, and video
Tape spooling
High mechanical whirring rising slightly in pitch. The rise is what makes it forward rather than back.
Digital scrub
Stuttering fragments played at speed, bright and glitching. The modern version, and it reads as a timeline rather than a tape.
Sped-up chatter
Speech too fast to parse, with no words audible. Funny on its own, and it says fast-forward without any mechanism.
Montage whirr
A softer continuous whirr with no glitching. Runs under a sequence without pulling attention to the device.
Reaching the end
The whirr stopping with a solid clunk and a settle. Punctuation that tells the audience the skipping is over.
Speed ramp
A whirr accelerating steadily throughout. Use it when a montage is meant to feel like it is getting away from someone.

Ways to use a fast forward sound effect
Fill a montage without music
A soft even whirr runs under a whole sequence and keeps it moving, without a track deciding the tone for you.

Tell the audience what era this is
Tape whirring reads as a machine with moving parts. A digital scrub reads as a timeline on a screen. The mechanism dates the scene.

Imply the hours you never filmed
Sped-up chatter over a static shot compresses a whole conversation into three seconds without shooting any of it.

常见问题
How do I make it sound forward rather than backward?
Raise the pitch as it goes. The mechanism is identical in both directions, so a rising whirr reads as fast-forward and a falling one reads as rewind. Nothing else reliably separates them.
Should I use a tape or a digital sound?
It dates your scene. Tape whirring with moving parts reads as a machine and a past decade; a stuttering digital scrub reads as a timeline on a screen. Pick the one that matches the world.
What runs best under a long montage?
The soft even whirr with no stuttering and no pitch change. Anything that glitches or accelerates pulls attention to the device rather than the sequence it is carrying.
How do I end a fast-forward cleanly?
With a clunk. A whirr that stops abruptly and settles tells the audience the skipping has finished, where fading the whirr out leaves the moment unresolved.
Why does my sped-up speech sound like an animal?
The pitch went too far. Ask for a high rapid chatter with no individual words audible but keep it recognisably human, since pushing the pitch harder stops it reading as people at all.
Can I use these in a commercial project?
Yes. Audio generated on a paid Morphic plan is cleared for commercial use, including film, games, and advertising.
