Python scripting

Writing short programs to automate and extend a 3D app

What is Python scripting in 3D?

Python scripting is writing short programs in the Python language to control a 3D app. A script can create objects, change hundreds of settings at once, process many files or add custom tools. Blender, Maya, Houdini and Cinema 4D all include Python, so the skill carries across apps.

Think of it like this

It is like writing instructions for a helper: write the steps once, and the helper repeats them exactly as many times as you like.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.

How Python scripting works

  1. 01The app exposes its scene, objects and tools to Python.
  2. 02You write a script in the app’s built-in text editor or any code editor.
  3. 03Running it performs the steps, such as adding objects or changing settings.
  4. 04Saved scripts can become buttons, menus or full add-ons.

Where Python scripting is used

  • Repeating one change across hundreds of objects
  • Batch renaming, exporting or rendering files
  • Building custom tools and add-ons
  • Generating scenes or patterns from rules

Beginner tip

Blender shows the Python command behind many actions in its Info editor. Copy those lines into the Text Editor, run them, and change one value at a time to learn quickly.

Python scripting in Morphic

In Morphic for Blender, Copilot in the Chat tab reads your scene and writes a Python script for the change you ask for. It shows the script on a card and runs it only after you click Apply, as one undo step.

Python scripting FAQ

What is Python used for in Blender?
Automating repeated tasks, building add-ons and custom tools, generating objects from rules, and batch jobs such as exporting or rendering many files. Much of Blender’s own interface is written in Python too.
Do I need to know Python for Blender?
No. You can model, animate and render without writing a line. Python becomes useful when you repeat the same task often or want a tool Blender does not include.
How do I run a Python script in Blender?
Open the Scripting workspace, create or open a script in the Text Editor, and click Run Script or press Alt+P. The Python Console beside it runs single lines as you type them.
Is it safe to run Python scripts from the internet?
Only from sources you trust. A script can do anything your user account can, including deleting files. That is why Blender does not run scripts saved inside a .blend file until you allow it.
