VRML
An early text format for 3D scenes on the web, saved as .wrl files
Also called Virtual Reality Modeling Language, WRL file
What is VRML?
VRML, the Virtual Reality Modeling Language, is an early text format for describing 3D scenes so they could be viewed on the web. A VRML file, ending in .wrl, stores shapes, colors, textures, lights and simple interaction. X3D has replaced it, but some color 3D printing workflows still accept it.
Think of it like this
It is like an early hand-written web page: readable, simple and a bit dated, but it still opens.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Export: Saving and sharing the result: file formats, engines and printing.
How VRML works
- 01A .wrl file is plain text listing objects called nodes.
- 02Nodes describe shapes, colors, texture images, lights and viewpoints.
- 03Nodes nest inside each other to build up a scene.
- 04A viewer or 3D app reads the text and draws the scene.
VRML vs x3D
| Property | VRML | X3D |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Replaced, no longer developed | Its current successor |
| Written as | Its own text syntax | XML, plus other encodings |
| Web use today | Needs old plugins or converters | Can run in modern browsers |
Use X3D for new work; keep VRML for older files and for printing services that still request .wrl.
Where VRML is used
- Opening archived 3D web content and older scientific models
- Sending full-color models to some 3D printing services
- Learning how scene description formats work
Beginner tip
Keep a .wrl file’s texture images in the same folder. Like OBJ, VRML points to images by name, so moving only the .wrl file loses the color.
