OBJ file

A simple, widely supported 3D file that stores a mesh

What is an OBJ file?

An OBJ file is a plain-text 3D format that stores a mesh: its vertices, faces, UVs and normals. Almost every 3D app can open it, which makes it a safe choice for moving a still model between programs. It does not store animation, rigs or lights.

Think of it like this

It is the plain-text document of 3D files: nothing fancy, but almost anything can read it.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Export: Saving and sharing the result: file formats, engines and printing.

How an OBJ file works

  1. 01The .obj file lists every vertex position, UV coordinate and normal.
  2. 02It then lists faces as groups of those numbered points.
  3. 03An optional .mtl file beside it names the materials and texture images.

OBJ file vs GLB

FilesAn .obj plus .mtl and imagesOne self-contained file
Best forMoving a still model between appsWeb, AR and real-time use

Use OBJ for a quick, compatible handoff of a still model; use GLB when materials, textures or animation must travel with it.

Where an OBJ file is used

  • Sharing a model between different 3D apps
  • Sending still models to 3D printing tools
  • Archiving simple meshes in a readable format

Beginner tip

Keep the .obj, its .mtl and the texture images in one folder. Moving only the .obj is the most common reason a model opens gray.

OBJ file FAQ

Does an OBJ file store textures?
Not inside itself. It points to a separate .mtl material file, which names the texture images. Keep all three together, or the model imports without color.
Can OBJ files hold animation?
No. OBJ stores one still shape. For animated models, use a format such as glTF, FBX or Alembic.
OBJ or STL for 3D printing?
Both work for a single-color print. STL is the long-standing printer standard; OBJ adds UVs and color data that most printers ignore unless they print in full color.
