How do you draw a magnifying glass so the lens looks like glass?
Put something behind it and change it. The lines inside the lens should be larger than the same lines outside, and they should break at the rim rather than continue through. An empty lens will always read as a plain ring.
How much should the lens magnify?
Roughly twice the size is enough. Beyond that the effect reads as a mistake rather than a lens. Offset the enlarged detail slightly from where it would sit outside the glass, since real lenses shift the image as well as scale it.
How do I draw the handle and where it joins?
The bezel is a shallow cylinder, so it needs an ellipse on both faces, and the handle meets it at a collar rather than touching the glass. Drawing the handle straight onto the circle is the most common thing that makes it look flat.
How do I draw a magnifying glass as a search icon?
Use one even stroke, keep the handle short and set at about forty five degrees, and leave the lens completely empty. Any interior detail stops the shape reading at small sizes, which is the opposite of what an icon needs.
How do I show light focused through the lens?
Darken the whole surface below and leave one small bright spot under the centre of the glass. Charcoal suits this because you can lift that spot back out with an eraser once the dark tone is laid down.
