Draw waves and finish them in your browser

Describe the waves you want in Morphic's Image tool, from a flat repeating motif to a single breaking swell, and get a finished drawing back. Set the wave shape, the foam texture, the line weight and the paper, adjust it on the Canvas, then download it in HD.

Wave compositions to draw

Wave sets rolling to shore

Three lines of waves stacked toward a low horizon in pencil, the near one broken and detailed, the ones behind reduced to simple parallel marks.

Inside the barrel

The view from inside a curling wave in ink and wash, the tunnel opening to a bright circle of daylight and the water thinning to translucency overhead.

Repeating wave border

A band of identical wave arcs running the width of the frame at even weight, the space above left blank so the pattern can carry a header or a label.

Waves against a rock

Water hitting a dark rock in charcoal, spray bursting upward in a ragged plume and the surface around the base churning into broken white texture.

FAQs

How do I draw a breaking wave?
Draw the back of the wave as a long smooth curve first, then steepen the face until it goes past vertical. The lip is the thinnest part and should curl forward and down. Add the foam last, spiralling off the crest rather than sitting flat.
How do I draw water so it does not look like hills?
Vary the spacing between wave lines instead of drawing evenly repeated curves, and break some of them where the water chops. Leaving the crests as bare paper and putting tone only in the troughs is what reads as water.
How do I draw sea foam?
Draw the shapes around the foam rather than the foam itself. Keep it as untouched paper with a ragged edge, put the darkest tone directly under it, and scatter a few small bubbles at the leading edge only.
How do I make a simple repeating wave pattern?
Ask for flat vector line art with nested arcs at a single stroke weight, no shading and no fill, built to tile. Keep the arc spacing even, since a repeating motif is judged on rhythm rather than realism.
Can I get a waves drawing on a plain background?
Yes. Ask for a plain white background with no sky, no beach and no horizon line, then crop it on the Canvas. That leaves a clean wave shape you can drop into a logo, a poster or a tattoo reference.
What medium suits a wave drawing best?
Ink line handles the curl and the foam spirals cleanly, graphite gives you the smooth gradients on an unbroken swell, and charcoal is the one for a heavy storm sea where the spray needs lifting back out of the tone.
