What is an establishing shot?
An establishing shot is a shot, usually wide, placed at the start of a scene to show the audience where the action takes place. It sets the geography before the film cuts to closer coverage.
What is the difference between an establishing shot and a wide shot?
Wide describes the framing; establishing describes the job. Establishing shots are usually wide, but a wide shot in the middle of a scene is not establishing anything. The purpose, not the size, defines it.
When should you use an establishing shot?
Use it to open a scene, to re-orient the audience after a jump in place or time, and to set the tone and scale of the story before the action starts.
Does an establishing shot have to be wide?
Usually, but not always. A close detail that unmistakably signals a place, a street sign, a landmark, a familiar object, can establish a scene too. Wide is the default because it shows the most geography.
