Moving carefully
Faint muffled presses with long silences between them. The silence is doing the acting here, so resist filling it, and the walk reads as somebody trying not to be heard.
One hard heel strike
A single planted step with a short scuff and no tail. Useful for the beat where somebody stops and turns, which no continuous walk can hand you at the right frame.

How do I make a footsteps sound effect?

Why do my footsteps sound wrong against the picture?
Almost always because the pace is off rather than the material. An audience forgives an approximate floor and never forgives steps that land between the frames where feet hit, so match the rhythm on screen first and refine the texture afterwards.
How do I make footsteps sound heavy?
Add drag and slow the pace instead of adding volume. A large person rolls their weight forward and their sole scrapes briefly as it does, so a slow dull thump with a short drag on it reads far heavier than the same step made louder.
