Where should a rimshot land relative to the joke?
A beat after the line ends, never on the last word. Landing it simultaneously makes it a sound effect; the small gap is what an audience reads as timing.
Should I generate it as one clip or three hits?
One clip. The spacing between the hits is the joke, and separate hits placed by hand almost never sit as naturally as a single generated phrase.
How is this different from the drum hit page?
That page is percussion as an instrument and serves any edit. This is comic punctuation, so the cards are organised by how the joke landed rather than by which drum was struck.
How do I signal that a joke failed?
Choke the cymbal, or drop it entirely. Two hits and a crash cut dead by a hand reads as a room that did not enjoy it, and a lone snare crack with silence after reads as worse.
