Augmented reality
Placing digital 3D content over a live view of the real world
Also called AR
What is augmented reality?
Augmented reality, or AR, places digital content, such as 3D models, labels or effects, over a live view of the real world. A phone, tablet or headset tracks the room and keeps the content anchored in place as you move. You still see your surroundings, with the digital layer added on top.
Think of it like this
It is like a sticker you place on the world through your phone, one that stays put on the table as you walk around it.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Export: Saving and sharing the result: file formats, engines and printing.
How augmented reality works
- 01The device’s camera and sensors map the room, finding floors, walls and tables.
- 02It tracks its own position as you move.
- 03A 3D model is placed at a spot in that map.
- 04Each frame, the model is redrawn from your new viewpoint, so it appears fixed in place.
Augmented reality vs virtual reality
| Property | Augmented reality | Virtual reality |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | The real world plus digital objects | A fully digital world |
| Device | Phone, tablet or see-through headset | A headset that covers your view |
| Awareness of your surroundings | Full | None while inside |
| Typical use | Products, directions and effects | Games, training and virtual tours |
Use AR when the digital content relates to the room you are in; use VR when you want to take people somewhere else.
Where augmented reality is used
- Previewing furniture and products at full size at home
- Face filters and effects in social apps
- Step-by-step repair and assembly guides
Beginner tip
Model in real-world units and keep the model light, with compressed textures. AR apps show objects at true size, and phones must draw them in real time while tracking the room.
