Polycount

How many faces or triangles a model has; the quickest measure of its weight

Also called Poly count, Triangle count

What is polycount in 3D?

Polycount is the number of polygons in a 3D model, usually counted as triangles since that is what graphics cards draw. It is the quickest measure of how heavy a model is. A higher polycount allows more detail in the shape but takes more memory and time to display.

Think of it like this

Polycount is like the page count of a book: it says nothing about quality, but it tells you how much there is to carry and read.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

The same shape with more faces looks smoother and costs more to store and draw.

How polycount works

  1. 01Your 3D app counts the faces, triangles and vertices in the scene.
  2. 02Quads and n-gons are counted as the triangles they will become.
  3. 03You compare that number against the budget for your platform or scene.
  4. 04If it is too high, you simplify, decimate or add lower detail versions.

Polycount vs vertex count

Use polycount to compare models at a glance; check vertex count when tuning real performance, since UV seams and hard edges add hidden vertices in engines.

Where polycount is used

  • Setting asset budgets for games and mobile apps
  • Checking whether a scan or AI model needs simplifying
  • Comparing how heavy two versions of a model are

Beginner tip

Keep scene statistics visible in your viewport. Watching the count as you model saves the surprise of exporting a prop far heavier than you planned.

Polycount FAQ

How do I check polycount in Blender?
Open the Overlays menu in the viewport header and tick Statistics. Blender then shows vertex, edge, face and triangle counts for the scene or the selected object in the top-left corner of the viewport.
What is a good polycount for a game character?
It depends on the platform and how many characters share the screen. As a loose rule of thumb, mobile characters often stay in the low thousands of triangles, while main characters on PC and consoles can use far more. Check your engine’s or team’s budget.
How do I reduce polycount?
Delete faces the camera never sees, remove edge loops that add no shape, or run a decimate tool for a quick automatic cut. For models that animate, retopology gives a cleaner result than decimation.
