Real-time rendering

Drawing 3D images fast enough to react instantly, as in games and viewports

What is real-time rendering?

Real-time rendering is drawing 3D images fast enough to keep up as you move, many times every second. It is what makes games, viewports and interactive product configurators respond instantly. To reach that speed, it relies on rasterization and clever approximations of light instead of fully simulating it.

Think of it like this

It is like a live TV broadcast compared with an edited film: it must look good right now, with no time to retake a frame.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Render: Lighting the scene and turning it into images or video.

How real-time rendering works

  1. 01The engine reads the camera, lights and objects for the current moment.
  2. 02It rasterizes the scene and shades each pixel with fast approximations.
  3. 03Effects such as shadows and reflections are layered on top.
  4. 04The finished frame is shown, and the loop repeats for the next one.

Real-time rendering vs offline rendering

PropertyReal-time renderingOffline rendering
Time per frameFractions of a secondSeconds to hours
LightApproximatedSimulated closely
InteractiveYesNo, you wait for results
Typical useGames, viewports, VR, configuratorsFilm, visual effects, print stills

Use real-time rendering when people interact with the scene or you need fast previews; use offline rendering when each frame must look as good as possible.

Where real-time rendering is used

  • Video games and VR
  • Product configurators on websites
  • Virtual production stages and previs
  • Quick animation previews before a final render

Beginner tip

Real-time engines reward baking. Precompute lighting into lightmaps and fine detail into normal maps, and the engine does less work every frame.

Real-time rendering FAQ

How many frames per second is real time?
There is no fixed line, but around 30 frames per second is the usual floor for smooth motion, and 60 or more is common in games. VR headsets usually want higher still to stay comfortable.
What is good real-time rendering software for beginners?
Blender’s built-in real-time engine is free and enough to learn on. Game engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity also render in real time and suit interactive projects.
Is real-time rendering as good as offline rendering?
Close, for many scenes. Modern engines with ray-traced effects can look very convincing, but offline renderers still handle complex light, glass and fine shadows more accurately.
