Matcap

A lit-sphere image that gives a model an instant look with no lights

Also called MatCap, Material capture

What is a matcap?

A matcap, short for material capture, is a small image of a lit sphere that a 3D app paints onto a model based on which way each surface faces the camera. It gives an instant clay, chrome or wax look with no lights or textures, which makes it popular for sculpting and previews.

Think of it like this

It is like photographing a glossy ball under a lamp, then painting every object as if it were made of that same ball.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Surface: Giving the shape its color and material: UVs, textures and shaders.

How a matcap works

  1. 01An image of a shaded sphere captures one material under fixed lighting.
  2. 02For each point, the app checks which way the surface faces the camera.
  3. 03It takes the color from the matching spot on the sphere image.

UseSculpting and previewsFinal renders and games

Use a matcap while shaping a model to read its form; switch to PBR materials for anything that must sit in a real, lit scene.

Where a matcap is used

  • Reading forms and surface flaws while sculpting
  • Quick clay-style previews and turntables
  • Stylized looks in games and apps on light hardware

Beginner tip

Switch between two or three matcaps while sculpting. A glossy one reveals bumps and dents, a matte one shows the overall shape, and each catches flaws the other hides.

Matcap FAQ

What does matcap stand for?
Material capture. The name comes from capturing how a material looks under light in one sphere image, then reusing that look on any model.
How do I use a matcap in Blender?
In solid viewport shading, open the shading options, set the lighting to MatCap and pick a sphere from the list. You can also load your own matcap images in the preferences.
Can a matcap be used for final renders?
For stylized work, yes. It ignores scene lights and shadows, so it rarely fits a realistic shot. For clay-style renders, many artists use a plain gray material with real lights instead.
