Clay render

A plain grey render that shows only form, light and composition

What is a clay render?

A clay render is a render where every object gets the same plain grey or white material, with no textures or colors. It shows only shape, lighting and composition, like a sculpture made of clay. Artists use it to check models and lights, and it increasingly serves as a clean layout reference for AI image and video generation.

Think of it like this

It is like a plaster model of a building: without paint or materials, you judge only the shapes and how light falls on them.

How a clay render works

  1. 01Give every object one matte grey material, or use a material override.
  2. 02Keep your lights and camera as they are.
  3. 03Render the frame.
  4. 04Review form, silhouette and shadows without colors pulling your eye.

Use a clay render to judge shape and light, and a wireframe render to show how the mesh is built; portfolios often show both.

Where a clay render is used

  • Checking a model’s shape before texturing
  • Testing lighting without materials as a distraction
  • Showing sculpts and models in a portfolio
  • A clay render for AI generation to follow as a layout

Beginner tip

Use a mid grey, not pure white, and keep it slightly rough. Pure white blows out under strong light and hides the shading you are trying to check.

Clay render in Morphic

In Morphic for Blender, Send render uploads your last render, clay or finished, to your Morphic assets. From there an image model can restyle it into a finished look, or image to video can turn it into a clip.

Clay render FAQ

Why use a clay render?
Color and texture can hide problems. With everything the same grey, you see whether the shape reads, where shadows fall and whether the lighting works, before spending time on materials.
How do I make a clay render in Blender?
In the View Layer properties, use the material override to put one grey material on every object, then render as normal. Assigning a single grey material to everything by hand works too.
Are clay renders good for AI image generation?
Yes. A clay render fixes the layout, camera and lighting without fixing the style, so an AI model can follow its shapes and add the materials you describe. Clear silhouettes and simple lighting give the most reliable results.
