Parametric modeling
Building CAD parts from dimensions you can change later
What is parametric modeling?
Parametric modeling is a CAD method where a part is built from measurements and rules you can change later. Every step, from the first sketch to a drilled hole, is saved with its dimensions in a history, so editing one number updates the whole model automatically.
Think of it like this
Like a recipe written with amounts: double the flour and every later step scales to match, without rewriting the recipe.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.
How parametric modeling works
- 01Draw a 2D sketch and set its dimensions and constraints.
- 02Turn it into a solid with a feature such as extrude.
- 03Add more features, each saved in order in a history tree.
- 04Change any dimension, and every later feature rebuilds to fit.
Parametric modeling vs direct modeling
| Property | Parametric modeling | Direct modeling |
|---|---|---|
| You edit by | Changing numbers in the history | Pushing and pulling faces |
| Design intent | Saved as rules | Not recorded |
| Best for | Parts with sizes and revisions | Quick concepts and imported files |
In parametric vs direct modeling, choose parametric when a design will be revised or made in several sizes, and direct modeling for quick one-off changes.
Where parametric modeling is used
- Product parts that come in several sizes
- Enclosures that must fit a changing circuit board
- Functional 3D prints you expect to tweak
Beginner tip
Fully constrain each sketch before you extrude it. A sketch with loose lines can shift when you edit a dimension later and break the features built on top of it.
