CAD (computer-aided design)
Software for modeling objects with exact measurements, ready to manufacture
Also called Computer-aided design
What is CAD?
CAD, short for computer-aided design, is software for drawing and modeling objects with exact measurements so they can be made for real. Engineers and product designers use it for parts, machines and buildings, in 2D drawings or 3D models where every dimension is precise and editable.
Think of it like this
Like drafting with a ruler, compass and calculator built in: every line has an exact length, so what you draw is what the workshop builds.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.
How CAD works
- 01You sketch a 2D outline and give each line an exact dimension.
- 02Tools like extrude and revolve turn the sketch into a solid.
- 03You add holes, rounded edges and cut corners by measurement.
- 04The model is exported for drawings, machining or 3D printing.
CAD (computer-aided design) vs 3D modeling
| Property | CAD (computer-aided design) | 3D modeling |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Parts that can be manufactured | Visuals for film, games and art |
| Geometry | Exact solids and curves | Polygon meshes |
| Measurements | Precise, down to fractions of a millimeter | Approximate, often judged by eye |
| Example apps | FreeCAD, Fusion, SolidWorks | Blender, Maya |
In CAD vs 3D modeling, pick CAD for anything that must fit, work or be manufactured, and polygon modeling for anything that only needs to look right.
Where CAD is used
- Mechanical parts, enclosures and machine components
- Functional 3D prints like brackets and replacement parts
- Architecture, floor plans and building design
Beginner tip
For functional 3D prints, start in CAD rather than a polygon modeler. Exact dimensions make holes, threads and snap fits line up with real hardware far more reliably.
