STEP file

The standard CAD exchange file for exact, measurable 3D parts

Also called STP file

What is a STEP file?

A STEP file is an open CAD format that stores a part’s exact geometry as precise mathematical surfaces and solids. Engineers use it to send parts and assemblies between different CAD programs without losing accuracy. Unlike a mesh, its curves stay perfectly smooth at any size. Files end in .step or .stp.

Think of it like this

It is like a recipe with exact measurements, where a mesh is a photo of the finished cake: the recipe lets anyone rebuild it precisely, at any size.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Export: Saving and sharing the result: file formats, engines and printing.

How a STEP file works

  1. 01The CAD app describes each surface with exact math, like true circles and arcs.
  2. 02Faces, edges and solids are linked, so the part stays a closed, measurable volume.
  3. 03Assemblies keep their separate parts, names and positions.
  4. 04Another CAD app reads the file and rebuilds the same exact geometry.

STEP file vs IGES

PropertySTEP fileIGES
AgeNewer, still developedOlder, largely replaced by STEP
SolidsStores full solids reliablyMostly surfaces and curves
AssembliesKeeps parts and structureLimited
Best forModern CAD exchangeOlder systems and legacy files

Send STEP by default for CAD exchange; use IGES only when an older system cannot read STEP.

Where a STEP file is used

  • Sharing parts between suppliers that use different CAD software
  • Sending designs to CNC shops and manufacturers
  • Archiving engineering models in an open format

Beginner tip

To 3D print or render a STEP model, convert it to a mesh first. Pick a fine export setting for curved parts, or round edges will show visible flat facets.

STEP file FAQ

STEP vs IGES: which should I use?
STEP, for nearly all modern work. It carries solids and assemblies more reliably and is still maintained. IGES is worth it only when an older CAD or machining system cannot read STEP.
STEP vs STL: what is the difference?
STEP stores exact CAD surfaces and solids that engineers can measure and edit. STL stores only a triangle mesh of the outside. Designers keep STEP as the master and export STL when it is time to print.
How to open a STEP file?
Open it in a CAD program, many of which offer free versions or viewers, or in a free online STEP viewer. Some slicers can also import STEP directly for printing.
Can Blender open STEP files?
Not out of the box. Convert the file to a mesh in a CAD app first, or use a community add-on that imports STEP into Blender.
What is the difference between STEP and STP?
None. They are the same format with two file endings, .step and .stp. Some older systems preferred three-letter extensions.
