Set dressing
Filling a 3D scene with props and small details so it feels lived in
Also called Scene dressing, Prop dressing
What is set dressing in 3D?
Set dressing is filling a 3D scene with props and small details, such as books, cables, plants and clutter, so it feels used and believable. It comes after the main layout of walls, big furniture and camera. Good dressing tells a story about who uses the space without a word of explanation.
Think of it like this
Like moving into an empty flat: the walls and sofa make it a room, but the mugs, coats and stacked mail make it someone’s home.
Where it fits in a 3D project
- Create
- Surface
- Rig
- Animate
- Render
- Export
Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.
How set dressing works
- 01Lock the camera and the big shapes first, so you dress only what is seen.
- 02Add mid-sized props that suit the place and the people who use it.
- 03Scatter small details in clusters, with wear, mess and a few things out of line.
- 04Check through the camera and remove anything that pulls focus.
Set dressing vs layout
| Property | Set dressing | Layout |
|---|---|---|
| Order | Second, after the space is set | First |
| Deals with | Props, clutter and small details | Walls, big furniture, camera and scale |
| Question it answers | Who uses this place? | Where does everything go? |
| Changes the shot | Mood and story | Composition and movement |
Do layout first so the camera and big shapes are fixed, then dress the set to add life where the camera can see it.
Where set dressing is used
- Making interiors, streets and shops feel used and real
- Telling a story about a character through their space
- Breaking up repetition in game levels and environment art
Beginner tip
Dress only what the camera sees. A few well-chosen props in tight clusters, with some wear and a few things out of line, read as more real than clutter spread evenly.
Set dressing in Morphic
With Morphic for Blender, you can light, dress and lay out a scene by describing it to Copilot and approving each change. The 3D tab can also generate props from a prompt and place them at the 3D cursor.
