Kitbashing
Building new models fast by combining parts from existing ones
Also called Kitbash, Kit bashing
What is kitbashing?
Kitbashing is building a new model by combining ready-made parts, such as panels, pipes, vents and whole components, from asset libraries or your own earlier work. Artists use it to build complex machines, cities and sets quickly, then tie the pieces together with shared materials and lighting.
Think of it like this
Like building a model spaceship from pieces of several different toy kits. None of the parts were made for it, but together they make something new.

How kitbashing works
- 01Gather a library of parts, bought, free or built yourself.
- 02Block out the big shape you want to build.
- 03Place, scale and combine parts to fill in structure and detail.
- 04Unify everything with shared materials, colors and lighting so it reads as one object.
Kitbashing vs modeling from scratch
| Property | Kitbashing | Modeling from scratch |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Fast for complex detail | Slower, every part made by you |
| Control | Limited by the parts you have | Total |
| Originality | Depends on how parts are combined | Fully your own design |
| Licensing | Check each kit’s license | You own it all |
Kitbash for concept art, previs and dense background detail; model from scratch for hero objects and anything that must be entirely original.
Where kitbashing is used
- Concept art and fast design exploration
- Dense mechanical and industrial surface detail
- Background buildings, cities and set dressing
Beginner tip
Keep the parts consistent in scale and style. A few kits used well look designed; dozens of unrelated pieces look like a junk pile.
