What is Runway Ruby?
Runway Ruby is Runway's SDR to HDR video model, announced on 21 August 2026. It takes a finished standard range video and extends its brightness and colour into high dynamic range, delivering the result as OpenEXR frames, a ProRes master, or a 10-bit streaming file. It generates no new imagery and adds no resolution, though output dimensions can be cropped to a multiple of 16.
What formats does Runway Ruby output?
Four delivery paths. OpenEXR sequences carry half-float frames in linear BT.2020 light for compositing, with colour information and audio packaged alongside. ProRes arrives as a BT.2020 PQ master in 422, 422 HQ or 4444. For streaming there is 10-bit HDR10 by default, or HLG for broadcast-style delivery.
Does Runway Ruby change the picture?
Not the content of it. The conversion is a bounded, colour-preserving grade: brightness is extended into the range HDR makes available, and the frames are not re-rendered. Nothing is added to the shot, no detail is invented at the edges, and the audio passes through untouched. The one thing to check is framing, since output dimensions can be cropped to a multiple of 16.
What footage can it convert?
Any standard range video, whichever tool made it: clips generated by an AI video model, footage shot on a camera, or files from an archive. Input has to be standard range, since footage already carrying HDR information is turned away, and each pass covers up to 30 seconds on a source under 4096 pixels per side.
Where does Runway Ruby struggle?
The conversion works from what survived in the file, so heavily compressed downloads, very dark footage and blown-out highlights all give it little to work with. Clean up and upscale before converting rather than after. The output also needs an HDR-capable screen to judge, and will look flat in a browser or a standard player.
How do I use Runway Ruby on Morphic?
