3D scanning
Measuring a real object or place to make an accurate 3D copy
What is 3D scanning?
3D scanning is the process of measuring the shape of a real object, person or place and turning it into a digital 3D model. Scanners use lasers, projected light patterns or photos to record millions of surface points, which software joins into a mesh. Accuracy depends on the scanner and the surface.
Think of it like this
It is like pressing a mold around an object, except light does the touching and the copy is digital.

How 3D scanning works
- 01The scanner projects light or a laser onto the surface, or photographs it.
- 02It measures where that light lands, recording points in 3D space.
- 03You scan from several angles until every side is covered.
- 04Software aligns the scans, joins the points into a mesh and adds color.
3D scanning vs photogrammetry
| Property | 3D scanning | Photogrammetry |
|---|---|---|
| How it measures | Lasers, light patterns or depth sensors | Photos only |
| Equipment | A dedicated scanner or a phone sensor | Any camera |
| Plain or dark surfaces | Handles better | Struggles |
| Color detail | Varies | Excellent |
Photogrammetry is one kind of 3D scanning; use a dedicated scanner for precise measurements or plain surfaces, and photos for rich color and large places.
Where 3D scanning is used
- Quality checks and reverse engineering in manufacturing
- Digital copies of statues, fossils and heritage sites
- Scanned props, people and sets for film and games
- Custom fits, such as dental, medical and footwear models
Beginner tip
Shiny, black and see-through surfaces scatter or swallow the light. A light coat of scanning spray or matte powder, where it is safe for the object, makes them scannable.
