Digital twin

A 3D copy of a real thing, kept in step with it through live data

What is a digital twin?

A digital twin is a virtual copy of a real object, building or process that stays linked to the real thing through data. Its 3D model is often made from scans or design files, and sensors keep it updated. Teams use it to monitor, test changes and plan repairs without touching the original.

Think of it like this

It is like a flight simulator that also knows how the real plane is flying right now, so you can test ideas safely first.

Where it fits in a 3D project

  1. Create
  2. Surface
  3. Rig
  4. Animate
  5. Render
  6. Export

Create: Building the shape: modeling, sculpting, scanning or generating it.

How a digital twin works

  1. 01Build a 3D model of the real thing from scans, CAD files or both.
  2. 02Connect it to data from sensors, machines or business systems.
  3. 03The model updates as the real thing changes.
  4. 04Teams watch it, run simulations on it and plan changes before making them.

Digital twin vs 3D model

PropertyDigital twin3D model
Linked to the real thingYes, through live dataNo
Changes over timeUpdates with the originalStays as made
Main purposeMonitoring, testing and planningViewing, rendering or making

Every digital twin includes a 3D model, but a 3D model becomes a digital twin only when it is connected to data from the real thing.

Where a digital twin is used

  • Monitoring factories, machines and production lines
  • Planning maintenance on buildings, bridges and plants
  • Testing city, traffic or energy changes before building them

Beginner tip

A scanned model for a portfolio or visualization is a 3D model, and that is fine. Call it a digital twin only when it is linked to real, changing data.

Digital twin FAQ

What are some digital twin examples?
A factory line whose model shows each machine’s live status, a building that tracks energy use room by room, a wind turbine monitored for wear, and a city model used to test traffic changes before roads are rebuilt.
How is a digital twin made?
Start with a 3D model from scans, photogrammetry or CAD files. Connect it to live data from sensors or software, then show both together in a platform that updates the model, often built on a game engine.
Do you need 3D for a digital twin?
Not always. Some digital twins are data models with charts and no 3D view. A 3D model helps when people need to see where things are, as in buildings, factories and cities.
