Retopology
Rebuilding a messy model with a clean, lighter mesh on top
Also called Retopo
What is retopology?
Retopology is rebuilding a model’s mesh with clean, evenly spaced faces while keeping its original shape. Artists do it after sculpting, scanning or AI generation, because those meshes are dense and tangled. A clean mesh is lighter, easier to texture, and bends properly when animated.
Think of it like this
It is like tracing a detailed drawing onto fresh paper with fewer, neater lines: the picture stays the same, but it is far easier to work with.

How retopology works
- 01Start with the dense mesh from a sculpt, scan or AI tool.
- 02Draw new faces over its surface, snapping each point to the original shape.
- 03Lay edge loops around eyes, mouths and joints so they bend well.
- 04Bake the fine detail from the dense mesh into a normal map for the new one.
Retopology vs decimation
| Property | Retopology | Decimation |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Rebuilds the mesh with clean faces | Deletes faces automatically |
| Result | Tidy quads that follow the form | Fewer, often messy triangles |
| Speed | Slow, partly by hand | Seconds |
| Good for animation | Yes | Rarely |
Decimate static props and quick previews; retopologize anything that will be rigged, animated or textured by hand.
